Learning A New Skill: How To Play On Piano

By Admin

For the beginner piano student, how to play on piano might seem like a kind of impossible task. The notes on the sheet music might seem too complicated, the piano too intimidating a musical instrument, the octaves too hard a stretch on your inexperienced fingers. This does not have to be so. Playing the piano can be a pleasurable experience both for you and your listeners, with a little bit of practice and a lot of perseverance.

The first thing to determine is the kind of music you enjoy. There is piano playing for the classically inclined, the gospel music if you are planning to play as accompaniment to the choir at your church, jazz and blues if you are more into improvisations and such. You can even learn how to play on piano with your favorite pop tune as your practice sheet. The tedious hours you put into practice won’t seem as tedious if you are practicing on your favorite tunes, and before you know it you are playing like a pro.

The things to learn before you can play piano from musical sheets are the notations which are a matter of staffs, notes, note values, clefs, key and time signatures, bars and beats, and tempo and dynamics. This does not seem so intimidating if you take your lessons easy.

Learn one symbol at a time. You can do this while playing easy beginner pieces to practice your fingers. Soon you will be able to read the system of musical notation. This skill will unlock a world of sounds which you will be able to perceive just by looking at a piece of paper with some lines, dots, and symbols written on it. By this time you will not only have learned how to play on piano, you can also use your newfound skill to compose music if you are so inclined. Some professional musicians do compose their music on a piano.
